Desk Clerks are hourly student employees who work at our Front Desks. The Front Desk are open 24 hours a day/7 days a week and some are also open over breaks. As the front line customer service employees in our residence halls, Desk Clerks are key to helping our residents feel connected to our University Housing community. Desk Clerks tasks include, but are not limited to: key loans, mail/package processing, recreational and kitchen equipment for check out, answering frequently asked questions, monitoring the security systems in the building, assisting with opening and closing the residence halls around break periods, and working with paraprofessional and professional staff who are on call for emergencies.

Job Description:
Title: Residence Hall Library Clerk
Department: University Housing – Residential Life – Residence Hall Libraries
FUNCTION
The library clerk is an undergraduate student position responsible for engaging with patrons and helping them find resources in the Residence Hall Libraries. The library clerk works independently and is often the first point of contact for patrons using the library, but may also be required to represent the library at outreach events at other venues.
For Fall 2022, clerk shifts will be Monday-Friday from 2:00-4:30 pm and 4:30-7:00 pm. We are looking for clerks to work between two to four 2.5-hour shifts per week, with the possibility of substituting for other clerks as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All University Housing staff will engage and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within University Housing.
Provide courteous service to all patrons.
Answer basic reference questions in person and on the phone.
Help patrons identify and locate materials both physically in the library and in the online library catalog.
Learn Alma Fulfillment software for checking materials in and out.
Consistently follow library policies and procedures.
Complete all tasks as assigned by your supervisor such as developing marketing materials, creating displays and bulletin boards, and selecting new materials for the library collections.
Communicate with your supervisor and co-workers, including responding to emails in a timely fashion.
Assist with programming and outreach events at venues outside of the library.
Attend all scheduled staff trainings and meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Able to work independently.
Willing to engage and interact with patrons in the library.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and Publisher.
Written and oral communication skills.
Must be flexible when staff schedules are created and willing to substitute for other clerks if needed.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Familiarity with the Residence Hall Libraries.
Previous
work or volunteer experience.
Customer service skills.
Applicants living in University Housing will be preferred if all other qualifications are equal.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The Residence Hall Libraries are a part of Residential Life in the Housing Department. This position reports to the Senior Library Specialist and Residential Life Librarian. Concurrently held positions are permitted but strict work hour limitations will be enforced automatically and without verbal warning beyond the understanding that employees MAY NOT go over their hours. Students holding positions as Housing Paraprofessionals must obtain approval prior to accepting a Library Clerk position.

20 hours/week MAXIMUM within the University (international students)
28 hours/week MAXIMUM within the University (domestic students)
