Integrated Pest Management

For the past several years, University Housing Facilities staff have been driven to improve the approach to pest management. After earning Green Shield Certification in 2014, the staff continue to improve the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) response, a safe and effective method for controlling pest populations. Old pest control methods required a general spraying of areas twice a year with pesticides. Practices now involve a more integrated approach which includes placing monitors in key locations and inspecting them to determine the best action. When a problem is defined, the least toxic methods are administered to control and manage the area.

Over the past year, the Housing staff assisted in allaying residents’ fear and confusion about the presence of harmful chemicals in living areas, since with this approach, harmful chemicals are not present. The current monitors are safe for use around children, pregnant mothers, and those with medical problems. For instance, Housing staff have been successful using a combination of heat and chemicals to control bed bugs. Housing staff are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week for any emergent pest issues and take great pride in their work to meet the goal to keep University Housing customers and staff healthy and comfortable in their living and working space.
